Austin Allen is currently a Teaching Assistant at Southern Methodist University obtaining a Performance Diploma Degree under the tutelage of Dallas Symphony’s Principal Percussionist Doug Howard and Principal Timpanist Brian Jones. Austin recently finished up his Masters in Boston, MA at New England Conservatory under Boston Symphony’s Will Hudgins.
Austin has held the position of Principal Timpanist for the Butler Symphony, as well as performed with the Dallas Symphony under the baton of Marvin Hamlisch. Other performances have included the DuBoise Orchestra, the West Virginia Symphony, the Pittsburgh Symphony Brass, the SCKPPY ensemble, the NOW Ensemble, the New England Conservatory Philharmonic, and the Harvard Symphony Orchestra.
Austin has won various competitions including the Western PA Percussive Arts Society Snare Drum Competition, the Duquesne Women’s Advisory Board Competition, as well as the Duquesne Orchestral Concerto competition. Austin has also been featured on NPR’s radio program “From the Top” and has released a jazz fusion album on which he plays vibraphone, drums, percussion, and piano.
As well as performing, Austin is a consummate composer, known primarily for composing pieces for various percussion instruments as well as chamber works featuring vibraphone.
